Course Description
Since lateral lisps are distortions and not developmental, SLPs know that they should be remediated early; however, elicitation of correctly produced phonemes can be difficult among young children, as well as carryover to varying word positions and generalization to spontaneous speech. Additionally, such habituated motor errors can be even more challenging to correct among older children, teens, and adults. This presentation will demonstrate how cognitive reframing paired with phonetic shaping can simplify andexpedite the therapy process for children and adults. Videos of therapy sessions will be presented to show examples of elicitation techniques in real-world situations. This 2-hour replay of a live webinar addresses how to properly assess for and successfully treat one of the most frustrating articulation errors... lateral lisps. What you'll learn:
How to identify key components of a speech assessment that can help SLPs identify or rule out underlying structural/functional impairments
How to use phonetic shaping and cognitive reframing for eliminating lateral distortions and eliciting correct production of target sounds
How to incorporate motor learning principles into therapy to facilitate generalization
